Monster Hunter Tri Diary 7 – The Rathalos Fiasco

As I’m writing this the birds are chirping outside and I have to get up to go to work in just a few hours. What started out as a relaxing evening with Monster Hunter Tri ended up being a incredibly frustrating setback. And it all has to do with my new biggest enemy in the [...]

Worshipping War

With E3 approaching the fundamental flaws and fallacies of the gaming culture are exposed as we are treated with a high dose of concentrated bullshit right from the hype engine that propels the industry. One thing that strikes me now more than ever is the fact how many games celebrate and worship war and soldiers. [...]

The Death of Tech Stores

Today I went downtown to check out some hardware / software. There are 3 big technology store chains downtown (Saturn, Media Markt, ProMarkt). I used to enjoy simply browsing through their stuff. Recently, I realized that they grow more and more redundant up to the point where I don’t see a reason to go there anymore. I [...]

Master Posters

As you might have heard, I’m currently working for Cologne Game Lab. I’m helping to establish a Master in Game Development and Research program. We are accepting applications now. Recently, I made two posters to advertise the program. I’m glad to be able to share the with you. Enjoy!

The Vicious Backlog Circle

I like to play games. I want to play a lot of games. But playing games takes a lot of time. And I don’t have much time. Thus begins a vicious circle of money-spending and frustration some of you might be familiar with. First I have no time to play games and when I do, I often [...]

A Mouse for Real Men

Writing about the all problems I encounter has an interesting therapeutic side-effect. It makes me realize how much they bother me and encourages me to do something about them. I recently wrote about the problems I had with my mouse. The many comments I received from you inspired me to dig deeper. After some research [...]

Beat Fleet: Turntable controlled Game

Beet Fleet” is the name of a work, that was made Filip Kostovic as a result of the Bachelor course of studies Game Design 2010 at the HdK Zürich. The sort of game uses two turntables as input devices, that controlles the action on the z- and x-axis. The visuals are abstract and strong, with parallels to Tron or Rez. The longer I think about this, the more it seems, that Beat Fleet is a consistent extension of the basic idea of Rez, taking real “analog” hardware controller into account. Will DJs keep on playing games in the future at work? Also check out the other works, they all look interesting. (via)

It’s totally changed! Can’t you see it?

I just saw the a live coverage of the WWDC presentation. Interesting to see the new iPhone. As always Apple makes a big fuzz about mundane improvements. I especially enjoyed little details like giving names to new technology. “Retina Display” seems emotionally so much more engaging than “960×640px 326ppi display”. It’s actually a well-known method [...]

Aging Well

I have been recently upgrading my Dreamcast library and going through some of the games. Playing old 3D games there is one thing that REALLY strikes me every time. They often age quite horribly. Case in point, Metropolis Street Racer. It actually is a very smart, cool racing game. It focuses on fictional city courses. It features [...]

Manufactoria: Robotists, unite!

manufactoria-robot-game

Manufactoria is a strange puzzle game, that is not that easy to access and understand. But somehow this makes the charm of this game, since robots (gone mad) are the topic of the game. The puzzles to solve are testing machines for the robots. Robots (in the real world) are a very unique topic of it’s own, that is not easy to access. That’s why I think, that the un-accessibilty of this game just perfectly match the mood. Rounded by the surreal Brasil-like soundtrack, I’ll bet, that Manufactoria will play into the heart of robotists in records time.

If you are into robot-games, please also check out Light-Bot and Little Wheel.

Enough Plumbers: Mario like Retro-Game

enough-plumbers-mario

Enough Plumbers is obviously inspired by Super Mario and retro-games in general. But it features also innovative and experimental game-elements. Every time the Plumber collects a coin, he will ge cloned. In the end many, many Plumbers try to reach the flag to end the level. The player controls all player-sprites at once.

The game was build by Glen Forrester and Arthur Lee. And while outside heavy rain is going to start, I better have another play with Enough Plumbers

Humans Escape to Space From Giant Insect Invasion

Space geekout time. You might have seen this most disturbing video. Cape Canaveral has been attacked by a giant mutant insect (00:06). Luckily, a company called SpaceX was able to launch an escape vehicle. The rocket safely reached orbit. The insects are no longer a threat But jokes aside, the launch was something special. First of all, [...]
