2011, 80% of active internet users will spend a substantial amount of time in virtual worlds

Gartner tech analysts pronounced that by the end of 2011, 80% of active internet users will spend a substantial amount of time in virtual worlds. Earlier this year, a few bloggers, including myself, tried to picture Second Life in the context of Gartner's Hype Cycle--my biggest concern was whether SL's platform would hold out long enough to reach Gartner's "Plateau of Productivity." Perhaps latching on to IBM's "gameframe" quickly enough, Linden Lab can buy a second life for Second Life.

Pulp fiction classics: Dr. Fu-Manchu

Sax Rohmer’s series about the ultimate villain of them all. The Chinese mastermind and criminal genius reaching out for world dominion in the foggy London of the 1920ies. With help of the most obscure means. Can two honest English gentlemen thwart the devilish plans of this sinister Chinaman?

Thom Yorke on Dubstep (and disrupt).

Funny little snippet from a recent BBC1 broadcast. Radiohead overtaking the Zane Lowe show – and philosophizing about Dubstep. The name “disrupt” is dropped there somewhere… Hui. Fine track selection throughout the show.

Bookmooch – swap your books around the world. For free!

Well, almost for free. A great concept for getting rid of your old paperbacks while receiving even more other books in return. Fine for classics and pulp fiction.

Crazy Patterns

Keys:
Arrow-keys, X and Y/Z

More a demo than a game is Crazy Patterns. It generates truly bliss bullet patterns and is not merely meant as a game, although it has some gameplay, making this a nice “in-between” application.

Game recommodation: Crystal from ACoders

A nice and not too hard game from the ACoders team: Crystal. The gameplay is somewhere between Bomb Jack and Emerald Mine, making this a fun experience for nighttime hours or the afternoon.
