ebay of the year: King Tubby’s bass speaker!

via the excellent MusicThing-blog: a bass speaker from King Tubby’s legendary Hometown Hi-Fi sound system has been found in a yard in Waterhouse / Kingston / Jamaica and been sold via ebay. Through this very speaker the first Dub tunes EVER may have been played during dances!

how to entertain people in secondlife?

"Jayce Logan: On Assignment – Smokin’ Aces Second Life Assassin

It’s not everyday you’re approached with an offer to be a hired gun, but that’s exactly what I found in my inbox when I checked my e-mail this afternoon. I was told L$1,000,000 was up for grabs and all I’d have to do was sign up and strategically place little bits of lead into the skulls of some other people. Hey, for a cool million? Who’d turn that down? "

who is building the metaverse ? – a panorama of current projects beside secondlife.com

looking at the hype around secondlife it would be pretty naive to believe this plattform would be and stay the unique social virtual reality project. i would not be very surprised if anywhere in silicon valey or another part of the international, some venture capital fed nerds would work on the the next secondlife.

yesterday sony presented the new 3d-world home a mix of microsofts live, the sims and parts and secondlife. lets keep in mind, that sony has great experiences with the field of mmorg with games like everquest or star wars galaxy. i am higly curious what we can expect from japan as next in this field. the grafic looks great and secondlife ist years behind to this.

i think the introduction of sonys new world is good occasion to take a short look around the world of metaverse-projects.

here you get the vidoe for download if desired: home.mov

read more about other projects around the metaverse in the whole article.

building the infrastructure of the metaverse

virtual reality is changing very fast in the net. its nearly impossible to say which plattform or concept will assert oneself.

at the moment i still believe or hope that it will be an open standardized concept like http / html for the web.

these four projects are know to me, and have the potential to build up an more open standard as secondlife is at the moment.

www.opencroquet.org
Croquet is a powerful open source software development environment for the creation and large-scale distributed deployment of multi-user virtual 3D applications and metaverses that are (1) persistent (2) deeply collaborative, (3) interconnected and (4) interoperable. The Croquet architecture supports synchronous communication, collaboration, resource sharing and computation among large numbers of users on multiple platforms and multiple devices.

www.uni-verse.org
The goal of uni-verse is to create an open source Internet platform for multi-user, interactive, distributed, high-quality 3D graphics and audio for home, public and personal use. The platform will support high-quality 3D-graphics as well as high-quality 3D-audio and acoustic simulation.

www.multiverse.net
"In July 2004, a team of Netscape veterans founded The Multiverse Network, Inc., a company aiming to become the world’s leading network of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) and 3D virtual worlds. Multiverse has pioneered a new technology platform designed to change the economics of virtual world development by providing independent game developers with the resources they need to enter and compete in the $2 billion online game market."

games-darkstar.dev.java.net
Project Darkstar is the game industry’s first open source, enterprise grade, highly scalable, online game server. From Massively Multiplayer Online Games to Casual Games, Project Darkstar can accommodate the varying needs of the online game developer through a single solution. Providing easy to use, simple API interfaces, Project Darkstar will have you up and running in a fraction of the time that it used to take in standing up online game solutions.
